Individuals increasingly function like micro-companies, directly offering their skills or products to a global market. They are supported by emerging technology infrastructure: ubiquitous high-speed internet from satellite constellations (probably Starlink), AI assistants that amplify productivity (coding, marketing, customer support assistants, etc), and blockchain-based finance that enables seamless cross-border payments.

Many professionals will act as independent enterprises of one, leveraging technology to multiply their impact. Personal AI agents play a pivotal role in this empowerment. Unlike the simple digital assistants of the past, these AI agents can autonomously handle complex tasks – from drafting reports and writing code to negotiating appointments—effectively becoming part of a solo worker’s “team.” Advanced AI tools now provide individuals with expertise that spans many domains. They serve as on-demand collaborators, consultants, and creative partners. This means a single person can design, build, market, and deliver a product or service without hiring a full staff.

Real-world examples of this trend are emerging. Startups have been launched by solo founders who use AI for everything from programming to customer service. Ryan Carson, a tech entrepreneur, described how he single-handedly built an AI-driven product using GPT-4 as a coding and business assistant. The availability of these AI “co-pilots” democratizes entrepreneurship—you no longer need a big company budget or a large team to innovate.

On platforms like Upwork (a global freelancing marketplace), the integration of AI into freelance work is accelerating. The vision of everyone becoming a micro-company would not be possible without the ability to work from literally anywhere. Thankfully, internet connectivity is rapidly expanding across the globe, turning remote corners into viable workspaces.

Satellite-based networks like Starlink have been game-changers in this regard. Starlink’s constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites delivers broadband internet to even the most isolated areas. In practical terms, a web developer could live in a mountain cabin or a sailboat in the middle of the ocean and still join video conferences or deploy code to servers. High-speed connectivity is no longer exclusive to big cities.

The implications for digital nomads are profound. With global internet coverage, a person is not tethered to any single location for fear of losing connectivity. We are already seeing traveling professionals equipping vans and RVs with satellite internet receivers, or carrying portable satellite kits in backpacks.

Starlink’s recent introduction of a “Roam” service plan (allowing users to pause, resume, and take the dish anywhere) is directly aimed at this wandering workforce. Additionally, new hardware like the Starlink Mini—a backpack-sized antenna—makes setting up a remote office in minutes even easier. Traditional telecom also expands coverage (for example, 5G mobile networks on every continent), but satellite broadband ensures that even off-grid locations have coverage. The result is a near-future where “connectivity where you least expect it” is the norm, enabling people to choose their living environment based on preference rather than proximity to an office or fiber line.

This unprecedented freedom to work from anywhere unlocks lifestyles that were previously impractical. We can envision a professional who spends one month working from a beach town in Southeast Asia, the next month from a cottage in the Alps, all while maintaining continuous work relationships and output.

Borderless Payments

One of the traditional headaches for global freelancers and remote entrepreneurs has been cross-border payments—bank transfers can be slow, costly, and complicated by currency conversions.

Enter stablecoins and blockchain-based financial systems as a solution. Stablecoins are digital currencies pegged to stable assets (like the US dollar), enabling digital transactions with cryptocurrency's global reach but without Bitcoin or Ether's wild volatility (I wrote about stablecoins recently, read it if you haven’t).

In the near-future work ecosystem, stablecoins act as the “lingua franca” of global payments: a designer in Nigeria, a coder in Brazil, and a consultant in Poland can all receive payment in, say, USDC (a dollar-pegged stablecoin) and convert it to local currency or hold it as they see fit. How amazing is that?

Major fintech companies are already embracing this to support the distributed workforce. For example, the HR platform Remote (a rival to Deel) announced that its clients – primarily U.S. companies hiring internationally – can now pay contractors in 69 countries via the USDC stablecoin. Stripe, the online payments giant, facilitates this by integrating crypto payouts into its platform. As Remote’s CEO noted, one of the biggest hurdles in international hiring is ensuring “fast, flexible, and reliable payments around the world,” and stablecoin payouts are a promising answer. In essence, a company in San Francisco can click a button to pay a contractor in Kenya, and that contractor will receive the funds within minutes in a digital wallet, rather than waiting days for an international wire transfer.

The advantages of blockchain-based payments go beyond speed. Lower fees are a big draw—sending money via stablecoin can be much cheaper than traditional remittance channels that take hefty percentages. There’s also the benefit of operating 24/7 with no need for banks to be open. Surveys show that freelancers are eager for this option:

Of course, these systems bring challenges, too—regulatory frameworks for crypto are still evolving, and freelancers must learn how to handle digital wallets securely. Everything Comes With Challenges

Yet, with all this optimism, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges and risks. Not everyone will have equal access to this future of work. There is a real danger of a growing digital divide—those with connectivity, tech skills, and the discipline for self-driven work will thrive, while others could be left behind. Infrastructure, while improving, is still uneven. Large swathes of the world lack reliable electricity or broadband, let alone satellite links; these regions risk further marginalization if remote work becomes the primary path to economic opportunity.

Regulation is another thorny area. Labor laws, taxes, and social safety nets were built around the traditional employer-employee model. They struggle to accommodate a scenario where someone in one country is contracting for another, paid in cryptocurrency, and aided by AI.

Questions arise:

There are also human challenges on a personal level. Being a micro-company of one can be empowering but isolating and demanding. Not everyone wants to juggle marketing, accounting, and execution alone, even with AI help. There is the risk of burnout when work and life boundaries blur across time zones. Digital nomadism can strain relationships or mental health if one is constantly on the move without a support network. And while AI agents can take over routine tasks, they also change the skillset required of humans—tomorrow’s workers need to be adept at working with AI, continually learning and refining what uniquely human value they add.
